 John C. Grier
|
John first began practice with the firm (then known as Mathews, Bergen, Vodica and Potash) in 1979 upon being admitted to the California State Bar Association (John had served the the firm prior six months as a law clerk, while studying for and waiting the Bar Examination results). Three years later, John became a full partner (the firm name became Mathews, Bergen, Potash and Grier). John became the managing partner of Mathews Bergen & Grier in 1995. The practice moved to El Cajon (although continuing to serve all of San Diego County) in 2004. Construction of a new office located at 172 Wells Ave., El Cajon is scheduled to begin 2007, after long delays.
John has 3 children, ranging in age from 15 to 23. The oldest (Genevieve) was a June 2006 graduate (with honors) from Cal Poly Pomona. Kendrick recently finished high school and is currently working in construction trades, while Corrie (16) is a student at Culver City High School, in Culver City, California. Culver City High School empasizes 'creative arts'. Each of John's children have a theatrical 'bent'. Genevieve's minor was theater (she particularly enjoys costume design). Kendrick was a 'boy sailor' in the movie Master and Commander, which was filmed nearby in Rosarito, Mexico and Corrie, in addition to her performing arts regular school has spent two summers at the La Jolla Playhouse and a recent summer at the Santa Monica Playhouse in theatrical study.
Other than his children, John's major outside interests are 'Texas Hold-um' (tournament style) and in the shooting sports (but, not hunting), particularly the shotgun sports of sporting clays and trap shooting. He is a member of the Lemon Grove Rod and Gun Club.
Photography is also an interest; the majority of the photos on this site were taken by John, either in the San Diego area (including the near-by desert) or in his home state of Colorado.

Wesley H. Mathews
|
Wes Mathews formally retired in 2000. He is the founding partner of Mathews Bergen and Grier (which firm has honored many other lawyers as partners over the years). When Wes decided to 'slow-down' in 1995, John Grier became the managing partner and soon thereafter moved the firm's principal location to Mission Valley. Wes continues to serve as Emeritus Counsel with the firm -- although, frankly, we see him less and less frequently. He is more likely to be found at his home in La Jolla, with wife Nancy -- or they may be located in the diverse locals of their sons, who variously reside in Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Honduras. With grandchildren located in such far-flung (albeit, beautiful) locations, who can blame the Mathews family for being away from San Diego!

 Robert L. Bergen
|
Since Bob Bergen's retirement in 1988, he has not desired to look much like a lawyer (whatever we may look like). But, he has authorized us to place a picture of him doing what he most likes to do. Bob is a true, world-class bike racer. Many time American and World Champion in his age division, although "slowing down", according to Bob, he still enthusiastically competes world-wide. Look for his name in the papers any time bikes are being raced; look to the Senior divisions -- well, start at the 75+ age group!

 Stacy L. DenHerder
|
An associate for several years, and later 'of counsel' to the firm, Stacy DenHerder has formed her own practice, specializing in the areas of Estate Planning and Probate. DenHerder and Associates is located in the Mira Mesa - Scripps Ranch area. Stacy continues to be a valued resource to Mathews Bergen & Grier when a conflict of interest exists or when a client needs the specialized, location-sensitive services her firm can supply. We serve her firm in a similar way.

For several years, Mathews Bergen & Grier has offered the opportunity for German law students to come to San Diego to complete a legal internship program which is a required aspect of their general legal education. Shortly before completing final exams, a three-month internship is required. Some of these young lawyers choose San Diego and some of these, Mathews Bergen & Grier, for this important practical legal education.
Mark Fuhrmann is a 30 year old newly minted attorney. He lives in Wiesbaden, Germany. Mark completed his tour as an intern with our firm in 2001 and passed this bar exam requirements in Germany in 2003.
In 1993,Wolfgang became our first intern from Germany. He was soon thereafter admitted to the bar and began practice actively in 1994. Wolfgang is a partner in Holztrattner / Schmid, a firm located in Germering, Germany. An updated bio is expected shortly and will be posted when received.
